�� THE NATURE FACT

Corals are master optical engineers. In shallow water, they produce fluorescent proteins that act as a chemical sunscreen, absorbing lethal UV rays to keep their internal algae from burning. In the pitch-black deep ocean, they do the exact reverse: they capture what little weak blue light penetrates the depths and warp its wavelength into orange-red light—effectively creating an internal grow-light so their symbiotic partners can photosynthesize in near-total darkness.
