It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of ecological challenges, but I’m interested in finding the organizations that are actually moving the needle through practical, economic solutions.

This week, I’m focusing on the Spectacled Bear Conservation Society. They’ve moved past the standard "save the animal" narrative to build something much more resilient—a model that links the survival of a keystone species to the water security and economic stability of local communities. It’s a perfect example of what I look for at Network for Ecology: solutions that are scalable, and human-centric.

In the mist-shrouded ridges of Northern Peru, the spectacled bear—South America’s only native bear—is navigating a landscape increasingly fractured by agricultural expansion. This loss of territory isn't just threatening a keystone species; it is dismantling the vital water-tower ecosystems that downstream communities rely on.
